Music and Time Annotation << Back Traditional-Regional Features of China Opera in the Bajczuj Music Drama T.M. Dzhani-zade, Li Jianfu This article considers a musical drama bajczûj existed among the Bai people, who live in southern China’s Yunnan province. The main problem is how the traditional features of Chinese Opera, which was formed in the theatre art of China during the reign of the European Middle ages (Yuan dynasty, 1271–1368), exist in the ethno-regional features of Bai musical drama: in the contemporary operatic subjects, which reflected the Confucian ethics, in local musical styles and melodies. The musical side of the opera – «airs», whose melody is based on two local styles: instrumental (čučujcân-melodies, performed by oboe-sona in military orchestras) and vocal (dabèncûj –melodies with narrative texts performed solo singer accompanied by plucked three-stringed sansân) is being researched. It is stressed that the special role of borrowed basic melodies from these two styles, the metrorhythmic and modal structures of which became the function of typed and quantitatively limited musical models (modus) with the poetic verses of different contents put in. Method of classification for describing these melodic patterns in bajczûj repertoire reveal the identity of the theater art of China minority and indicate the historical interaction between China musical traditions with the traditions of West neighbourhood – India, Iran, Central Asia.
