Music and Time Annotation << Back The Hymns Dedicated to St. Stefan Milutin, King of Serbia, and Located in Russian Notated Manuscripts A.A. Bulykina The article is devoted to the examination of a set of chants in honor of Stefan Milutin, king of Serbia, that is included in Russian notated manuscripts of the late 16th – middle 17th centuries. The set consists of 29 musical and poetic texts related to the rite of the All-Night Vigil service with the Polyeleos. The article deals with specific features of the musical structure of the service. They are based on the interplay of sameness and contrast, and are revealed through the glas usage and the combination of the prosomoia (“Podobny”) and idiomela (“Samoglasny”) types of melodic construction. Each part of the service has its own original structure of the glas usage and the prosomoia and idiomela combination, but all the sections are interrelated. The glas system forms linking arches between microcycles. The core of the musical structure is the microcycle of the Lity (Litiyá) developed according to the principle of “glas-ladder” (successively from the 1st to the 5th glas). This microcycle is the only one that represents a polyglas succession of stichera idiomela. The glas system of the service includes the complete cycle of Octoechos (eight-mode system, “osmoglasie”) with the exception of the 7th Glas. A special role is attributed to the 3rd glas that appears in all sections of the service and is represented by the dismissal troparion.
