An overview of Some of the Tonal Innovations of the Russian Musical Avant-garde Early XX Century |

One of the major «breakthroughs» in the musical art of the early twentieth century was the development of non-tonal ways of organizing. Innovations in the area of pitch, in our view, largely determined the phenomenon of Russian avant-garde music of the time. It is here that most composers identify his «plan of the phrase» by creating several variants of high-rise idiomatum, comparable in importance with dodecaphony appliances in the West. So, widely known, for example, system of I. Vyshnegradsky,
N. Roslavets and others. However, not all composers findings of this kind were formed into a coherent theory. A lot of interesting
and original phenomena can be found in the works of A. Lurie, A. Stanchinsky, A. Tcherepnin, A. Avraamov and other members of the Russian musical avant-garde of the early twentieth century. Review of some events in the history of the tonal innovations and the subject of this article.
