Artistic Transformation of the Nature’s Sounds in the Music of Tuvans (The Sound Calendar of Nomads) |
V.Y. Suzukei
Following the traditional patterns of existence in which a leading branch of economic activity was a nomadic cattle breeding (husbandry and hunt), with changing seasons and intermediate pasture, the Tuvans had contacts with all types of landscape. Surrounded by mountains, Tuva is located on the joint of Siberian taiga and steppes of Central Asia. Climate is sharply continental. High mountains, taiga forests, valleys, rivers and steppe – each produce their own unique sounds, paints and scents. To this rare phenomenon contributes spreading sound of the human voice. Traditional sound symbols produced through the constant observation of surrounding nature constitute particular sound calendar which used to play an important role in life of nomads. It is necessary to highlight the fact that in ethnographic literature numerous elements of nomadic lifestyle have gained deeply detailed analysis. However, this particular perception of «sound», intertwined
closely with surrounding nature and defined by the nomads as «sound calendar», is for the first time approached by us as an analytical phenomenon called «sound calendar».
Keywords: Tuva, nomadism, sounds of the nature, shamanism, vocal and instrumental onomatopoeias the voices of beasts, birds and animal and their manifestations in Tuvan music.
