Musical Works by Russian Composers in Honor of Particular Saints |
N.G. Minchenkova
The article is devoted to the choral works of Russian composers in honour of the most revered saints. The paper examines the works created during the entire period of existence of the Russian national school of composition, starting with the last third of the XVIII century and to the present day. The article describes the continuity of creating works on canonical liturgical texts from ancient hymnographers through the ancient rospevshchiks and Baroque artists of musichi to Russian composers (Baroque composers). The work of composers with genres of ancient music, chants, osmoglasie (oktomodal system) and podobie (likeness) is noted. Orthodox calendar includes a large number of names of saints, among which many are of particular importance in human life. Notated chants to these saints most often recorded in ancient Russian liturgical singing books. These are images of the saints to
which the creativity of Russian composers was treated. However, composers are not only inheritors of a centuries-old tradition. They are both innovators in referring to the images of those saints, hymns to which was rare notated in Ancient Russia.
Keywords: Russian composers, particular saints, choral works, Orthodox calendar, Church hymns.
