Music and Time Annotation << Back The Sonata Strophic Form in S. Taneev’s Choral Music G.V. Grigoryeva The article covers S. Taneev’s choral music written in sonata strophic form. This set of choral compositions has never been viewed within the framework of sonata approach which reflects the classical traits of the composer’s style. The structure of the form is substantiated, its earlier samples (by Mozart) are provided. In Taneev’s music the sonata approach reflects the plot of the lyrics abundant in philosophic antithesis, and also the verses structure. Under discussion are the choral compositions set to poems by Y. Polonsky (op. 27), K. Balmont (op. 35) and other Russian poets. Old sonata strophic form, sonata strophic form with no development section, sonata strophic rondo are being analyzed. The sonata approach taken as a basis extended considerably the traditional genre type of the form, which indicates the composer’s innovation in choral music.
