Music and Time Annotation << Back Myaskovsky`s Romances with Poems by Gippius as a Musical Anthology of the Work by the Poetess E.V. Lobanova This article explores romances composed by Nikolay Myaskovsky with poems by Zinaida Gippius. This is the fullest musical collection of poems by this poetess. The contribution analyzes the main features of the poetic style and the creative structure in Gippius’ poetry. On the one hand these features served as the main reason for the lacking attention to her poetry paid by many contemporary composers. On the other hand these were exactly the features of Gippius’ poetry, which attracted Myaskovsky so much. The research object encompasses all 27 romances by Myaskovsky with poems by Gippius. These romances were composed in the earliest years of Myaskovsky’s work and present the most interesting material for understanding the sources of his composition style. Exactly this style mirrors the major tendencies in the development of the chamber-vocal genre in the beginning of the twentieth century. This article explains the main features of tunes, harmony, rhythm, proportions of the vocal and instrumental parts in romances as well as the sound techniques used for creating expressionist images. The main features of the musical structure in these romances display a strong tie both to the musical expressionism as well as to the composition style of M. Mussorgsky, A. Skriabin and A.
