Dictatorship of the Proletariat
and the Musical Community
in Russia |
T.A. Parkhomenko
The article analyzes the policy of the proletarian dictatorship towards the music community in Russia, the decrees of the
Soviet authorities «about requisition, confiscation and nationalization» of musical instruments, libraries, publishing houses, music
shops and warehouses, the abolition of private property, right of inheritance and copyright, and others. As an example, author
considers the destinies of the cultural heritage of famous composers Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov. The author offers the analysis
of censorship policy of the proletarian dictatorship towards music, opera and pop repertoire, which in the early Soviet years has
undergone drastic reduction and alteration for the sake of interests of «the people and their party». The article investigates the
position of musical community under the proletarian dictatorship and its relation to the cultural policy of the Bolsheviks, which was
complex and ambiguous. When radical leftist leaders actively supported the policy to approve «Art Commune», «folk art» and
«proletarian culture», the old pre-revolutionary intelligentsia split into those who decided to emigrate from the country, and those
who were ready to join the work of building new Soviet culture. The article ends with the conclusion that the policy of the proletarian
dictatorship had launched a vector of spiritual development of the country to the nationalization of culture, the subordination of
individual creativity to the communist ideology, the absorption of the individual by the state. And if earlier Russian patriarchal world
was largely turned into the past, seeking there and only there to find examples for the present, the Soviet culture gazed everything
into the future, which was valued more than history and considered to be more important than the present - art of socialist realism
is a good example of that statement.
