Commedia in musica
«Li zite ’ngalera» (1721)
Bernardo Saddumene
and Leonardo Vinci – an Unknown
Masretpiece of Forgotten Genre |
P.V. Lutsker, I.P. Susidko
The main object in the article is the opera «Li zite ‘ngalera» by Leonardo Vinci written on libretto by Bernardo Saddumene
(Naples, Teatro Fiorentini, 1721). The opera became one of the most brilliant examples of the genre of Neapolitan musical comedy
that used to be performed on local Neapolitan dialect. One of the articles topic is the description of Saddumene’s libretto which
combines the features of Spane comedy of decapa y espada with improvised commedia dell’arte as well as tragicomedy-opera of
17th century. Musical composition by Vinci is built on the base of Italian opera seria principles (with alternation of recitativi secchi
and arie da capo). The solo numbers occupy the dominant position in the parts of romantic heroes devoted to depiction of typified
affects. In arias and ensembles of comic characters on the contrary the idioms of buffo style are widely employed. The method of
parody is used in opera also very frequent and obtains a definition as contextual parody – the humoristic effect arises on account
of the contrast between serious character of musical number and comic stage situation.
Keywords: Neapolitan commedia in musica, comic opera of 18th century, Leonardo Vinci, Bernardo Saddumene, Italian opera seria, idioms
of musical buffo style, musical parody.
