Music and Time Annotation << Back The Piano in O. Messiaen’s Orchestral Works S.M. Lopushanskaya This article is devoted to the points of the piano treatment in O. Messiaen’s orchestral and choral works. The composer used this instrument in the most of his own orchestral works, differed in the idea, scale, instrumentation, the date of writing, musical language. The main features of Messiaen’s orchestra, the role and functions of the piano, their interaction are also considered. Special attention is paid to the fact that the piano in the orchestra is presented as a solo instrument, a part of an ensemble and an orchestral instrument. The author concludes that in spite of the difference in the interpretation of the instrument caused by the evolution of musical language of the composer, the piano in Messiaen’s orchestral works is presented as a brilliant concert instrument.
