Music and Time Annotation << Back The Specificity of Nondodecaphonic Serial Technique in Dirge-Canons and Song «In Memoriam Dylan Thomas» by Igor Stravinsky Z. Chernukha In spite of the late period of Stravinsky’s work was often investigated, in this article there was a try to discover specificity of constructive method of the composer through the nondodecaphonic technique of organization of the particular work: Dirge-Canons and Songs «In Memoriam Dylan Thomas». This opus dedicated to the famous English poet, was the first completely serial composition by Igor Stravinsky. In the memorial composition evidently reflected the process of finding a combination of diatonic, chromatic and serial principles of organization musical space. This research work discovers the influence of thematic material on a tone row, and it also shows impact of polyphony technique of the 15–16th centuries on the serial organization, that, in particular, was manifested in form of canon. In the article analyzes features of interaction the poetic form of the villanelle with the strophic form of central episode, and formed generally symmetrical shape of composition with two kinds of rondo in framing parts. Special attention in a research work is paid to the specific instrumental timbres solutions of piece. Attached to this article there are some analytic diagrams of nondodecaphonic technique concerning Stravinsky’s work.
