T. Sapegina
Classical music is the most distinctive element of sound in Hollywood cartoons. Its function differs from a target for parody to basis for choreographic miniature or future length film. But in many cases the short recognizable fragments of famous operatic or instrumental pieces are used as a part of compiled soundtrack. They appear in generic plot situations in different studios cartoons as elements of audiovisual formulas. The history of such stereotypes, their origins in the musical practice of the silent era and their presence in the cartoons of the biggest Hollywood studios, like Walt Disney Studio and Warner Brothers Cartoon Studio are explored in the article.
Keywords: classical music, audiovisual stereotypes, cartoons, Hollywood, Walt Disney, Carl Stalling, Warner Brothers.
