Neoclassicism in French: mass F. Poulenc |

The article analyses one of the poorly explored works by F. Poulenc - Mass in G‑dur. The aspect under discussion is neo-classicist music stylistic trend in the 20th century. The Mass is considered within the framework of the sacred works of the composer, and also as a phenomenon of the French musical culture of that time associated with the revival of Catholicism. The traces of neo-classicism are accentuated in the connection with the restoration of the signs of the medieval monody, the Renaissance polyphony, harmonic peculiarities of the sacred music of the past. There is a certain influence of Stravinsky (irregular rhythm); neo-classicist features of Poulenc’s music are also regarded in view of Debussy’s mystery “the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian”, in which bright features of French Neoclassicism are concentrated. The article also describes the forms of the parts, the tonal plan of the whole work, the melodic peculiarities as connected with the text.
