Wolfgang Caspar Printz Life Story, Told in the First Person |

The article views personality and theoretical heritage of Wolfgang Caspar Printz, who belongs to the leading music theorists of the second half of the XVII century. Printz was the author of the first work on music history written in German, he laid the foundations of the musical accentual meter’ theory, his treatise «Phrynis Mitilenaeus, oder Satyrischer Componist» (1696) became one of the most extensive summary works on music theory in Germany in the XVII century. In autobiography Printz listed 22 of his theoretical works, only six of his treatises survived. The article introduces the domestic reader for the first time with the materials biography compiled by Printz. Biography exists in two versions. First autobiographical sketch appeared in 1690 as the final chapter of the Printz’ treatise «Historische Beschreibung der edelen Sing- und Kling-Kunst». Printz prepared a second, more extensive essay on his life in 1711. This version was completed by his son, Christof, after his death and published in the lexicon of Johann Mattheson «Grundlage einer Ehren-Pforte» (1740).
