Music and Time Annotation << Back On «New Simplicity» of the Timbre Palette in V. Martynov’s Music V. Grachev This article discusses features of timbre palette inherent to V. Martynov’s religious music since the mid-1970s. In the author's view are ontological principles of attitude: a religious view of the composer on behalf of the Creator, the reliance on prayer, detachment from the human world, sense of the incommensurability of human life from the eternal flow of time, etc. They contribute to the appearance of a «two-tone» in timbre «silhouette» of Martynov’s music, which intertwine elements of «new simplicity» of the twentieth century and the old thinking on the basis of the canon of liturgical singing. These ideas also determine the prevalence of vocal and choral singing over instrumental accompaniment, static of timbre combinations and their constant repetition in various works.
