Music and Time Annotation << Back The Role of the Violin Repertoire in the Professional Development of a Modern Erhu Performer Wang Huixian The article reveals the reasons that led to the entrance of the traditional string instrument erhu (Chinese violin) onto the wide world stage in the 20th and 21st centuries. One of the most signifi cant incentives for enriching the possibilities of the erhu was the inclusion of European violin music in its repertoire. The traditions of violin performance prompted Chinese musicians to transform the techniques of playing the erhu and improve the instrument itself. The adoption of the violin repertoire also had a noticeable impact on the way of thinking of Chinese composers.
