Music and Time Annotation << Back Anton Rubinstein «Die Gedichte and das Requiem fur Mignon» from Goethe’s «Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre» op. 91 (to the Issue of the Composition’s Genre Membership) Li Chao The article is devoted to one of the forgotten masterpieces of Russian vocal music of the 19 th century. The genre membership of Anton Rubinstein’s opus «Die Gedichte and das Requiem für Mignon» is considered as a subject of debate. It is concluded that the composition has a special form of style synthethis. The work addresses the complex issue on the evolution of the Requiem genre in the art of the Romantic period musicians. The story of creation of the composition by Anton Rubinstein, its’ literary basis and its’ correlation with the works of Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Peter Shubert, Johannes Brahms; with the art of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his philosophical credo are also revealed. The structure and the dramaturgy of the cycle through the spectacle of the life of genre is critically examined. Many innovative features of Anton Rubinstein’s composition at the intersection of chamber music, cantata, oratorio and opera music – dramaturgy, style and structural characteristics are analyzed. It is proved that Rubinstein in the composition appears as a composer-innovator.
