N.D. Sviridovskaya
This article is devoted to the first professional puppet show «The Powers of Love and Magic», presented in Russia in February 1916, by director and actor P. Sazonov (1883–1969) and his wife, actress, theater critic, journalist Yu. Slonimskaya (1884–1957). The production became an important cultural event in prerevolutionary Petrograd, reflecting a genuine interest in the problems of the theatre. Brilliant, estranged from reality, the fairy-tale pastoral obeyed the conventions and game logic inherent in the nature of the puppet theater. The comedy was visited by Meyerhold, Akhmatova, Blok, Drizen, Evreinov, Benois, Somov, Vengerov, Gumilyov, Makovsky and others. On the basis of handwritten materials stored in the Russian Archive of Literature and Arts, the work restores the musical accompaniment of the performance, owned by F. Hartmann (1884–1956), composer, pianist, conductor, student of S. Taneyev and A. Arensky, close friend of V. Kandinsky.
