Music and Time Annotation << Back Issues of Authentic Performance Through the Prism of a Historical Organ Yu.V. Glazkova The article is devoted to the search for an answer to the question: are modern musical instruments "the top" of their long development, are they "better" and "more perfect" than their ancient prototypes? The author is looking for the answer in the history of organ building and in a detailed examination of the surviving historical organs. The article talks about how general aesthetic and stylistic musical trends influenced the construction of organs, what factors influenced their preservation, and vice versa, their destruction and restructuring. Can we consider the existing ancient instruments of different eras, starting from the 14th century, as “relevant” today, and do modern “universal” organs surpass them in their sound and technical characteristics?
