Features of the Baritone Part in the Chinese Contemporary National Opera |
Chang Cheng
In the new Chinese opera, at the initial stage, which included elements of traditional Chinese opera, there were few arias for the baritone, since the low voice of the baritone was considered unacceptable for the performance of the main roles. The appearance of the baritone immediately changed the monotonous situation in the vocal music of the national opera. Visual and auditory sensations have also changed - from the original "flat" to the new "three-dimensional". The original concept that Western baritone could not be integrated with the singing of the new Chinese national opera was vigorously refuted. This transformation signifi cantly improved the creative possibilities of national operas, enriched the form of performance of national operas and diversified the characteristics of operatic characters. The Chinese performing vocal culture has not yet been suffi ciently investigated, and the article for the fi rst time presents an analysis of the baritone part in the operas "The Gray-haired Girl" and "The Desert".
Keywords: Chinese National Opera, baritone, traditional Chinese culture, character image, characteristics of Western opera, opera "Desert", "Gray-haired girl".
