The Spanish Organ School in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries |
M.A. Moiseeva
The 19th century has been the most controversial, if not crisis period in Spanish history. Political and economic problems led to a decline in various fields of the arts. The organ school was no exception to this, neither in music-making nor organbuilding. The majority of the organs installed in the churches on the peninsula during that period were built by French masters, in particular the famous Aristide Cavaille-Coll, and the surviving works were often fairly primitive applied compositions. The best creative minds, however, tried to reinvigorate the Spanish organ school, and while its former heights could not be reached, at the turn of the 20th century their efforts resulted into some brilliant works which would embellish concert programs of contemporary performers.
