Music and Time Annotation << Back On the Development of the Russian Opera in China Xu Kehan This article discusses the influence of Russian opera on the musical culture in China, as well as the Russian opera history on the Chinese theaters stage. The cases of such interaction occur back in the first quarter of the 20th century, when the Russian immigrants created musical societies, theater companies and other institutions that made a significant contribution to the development of the European musical tradition in China. Russian musicians and cultural figures have had a great influence on the formation of Chinese professional practice. This also resulted in the operatic works of Chinese composers, considered in the article, based on the works of Russian writers («The resurrection» by L. Tolstoy, «The dawns here are quiet» by B. Vasil’ev). The problems of the history and Russian opera development in China, poorly developed in Russian musicology, are of particular interest in the study of Russian Chinese cultural relations.
