Music and Time Annotation << Back Kashchey the Deathless’ Spell of Death: on the Influence of the Lullaby Genre on the Dramaturgy of a Little Autumnal Fairy Tale by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov A.S. Lukashova This article is aimed at considering the dramaturgical importance of one of the brightest arias of the opera Kashchey the Deathless by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov – The Evil Lullaby of Tsarevna. Noting its originality, researchers, as a rule, did not pay much attention to the interaction of the lullaby with the dramaturgical side of the opera, as well as the significance of this genre for the opera as a whole. This work shows the connection of the lullaby of Tsarevna Beloved Beauty with the main material of the opera, its participation in cross-cutting development, a special compositional solution and semantic content – the prophetic foresight of Kashchey’s death; the folklore origins of the genre (mortal lullaby) were investigated and direct parallels with other folk genres (lamentation, nursery rhymes) were revealed. The analysis shows the “functional likeness” of the musical material of the lullaby of the main positive female character of the opera to the thematism of her antagonist Kashcheyevna, as well as the functional inversion of the impact of the lullaby when performed in a “different” (Kashchey’s) world. The internal “genre flexibility” of Tsarevna’s lullaby and the ability to interact with the musical characteristics of other characters in the opera is a consequence of the manifestation of the spellbinding nature of its thematicism. The signs of the genre are taken out of local use (“dispersed” genre) and appear as one of the principles of the dramaturgical integrity of the work.
