The Iberian Organ in the New World |
M.A. Moiseeva
The paper covers the emergence of the Iberian Organ in Latin America as a result of its evangelization by Spaniards. In the sixteenth century two new Spanish viceroyalties were created in the New World: New Spain and Peru. New Roman Catholic churches were actively built there, having their own chapels which were modelled after the Spanish ones. A high priority was to early equip the churches with the organs. At first, the instruments were shipped from Spain in a dismantled condition. Gradually, local masters learned to build positive organs. The large church organs also started to be built directly at the churches of the New World. Ones of the notable examples are the organs of the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral built by José Nassarre, which have survived to this day. Tracing the history of secular application of the organ in Ibero-America is a more challenging task, but we can assume that positive organs were used for domestic music-making and accompaniment for dances.
Keywords: Ibero-America, the New World, evangelization, the organ, Mexico City, José Nassarre.
