About some principles of composition of Peter Maxwell Davies |
E.O. Tchernova
Peter Maxwell Davies (1934–2016) is an outstanding English composer of the second half of the 20th century who belonged with H. Birtwistle and A. Goehr to the so-caled «Manchester School». The basis of the composer’s technique is work with borrowed sources. As Peter Maxwell Davies was one of the first authors in British music to implement the principles of serial work in his compositions special attention in the paper will be given to the construction of serial «magic squares», their semantic connotations and the laws of symmetry. The First symphony and «Ave Maris Stella» for the instrumental ensemble provide basis for investigation of the composer’s work.
Keywords: Peter Maxwell Davies; contemporary composers' techniques; post-serialism; English music.
