Music and Time Annotation << Back «Paganism» as a phenomenon of Russian music of the early XX century: to the origins of people-national nature A.I. Demchenko, O.V. Nemkova The relevance of the article is conditioned by the necessity of creating a holistic and multidimensional picture of the emergence and development of «pagan-ism» as a vivid artistic phenomenon of Russian music of the early XX century. The paper solves the problem of determining the cultural-historical, ideological, aesthetic, stylistic phenomenology of the «pagan» direction in the musical art. The complex of musical-linguistic «archaic» components – intonation, rhythmic, timbre, texture, structuralis investigated. The main analytical emphasis is concentrated on the works of I. Stravinsky and S. Prokofiev. As the cornerstone of the aesthetic foundation on which «paganism» was based, the spirit of primevalness, embodied through the introduction of pantheistic color, the wide inclusion of ritual elements, the intensive use of archaic intonation, is noted. Accepting the concept of «pagan-ism» as generic, the concepts of barbarian and scythian are considered separately as more specific. Behind the attraction to the ancient archetypes was the desire to penetrate into the depths of the national order, to feel the continuity with the original properties of the national character. The main meaning of this artistic phenomenon was to display occurring at the beginning of the XX century, an extremely powerful surge of human will and energy, extremely temperamental expression of the hidden forces and aspirations that rose to the surface of life.
