Jose de Nebra (1702–1768): portrait of a musician |
M.A. Moiseeva
This paper deals with the work of an outstanding Spanish 18th-century composer José de Nebra (1702–1768). Born in Aragon, Nebra, as young man, moved to Madrid and soon became an important figure in the capital’s musical life, being engaged in the work involving the royal choir and in the major theatrical performances taking place in the city. The author focuses on such basic spheres of his professional career as composing for keyboard instruments, for theatre and for the church, as well as teaching music. All these activities were closely connected with the historical and cultural environment of the epoch, such as the appearance of a new royal dynasty and the increasing Italian influence. These talents, which involved taking into consideration Italian music and traditional Hispanic heritage, as well as the melodic talent of the composer, brought him fame during his lifetime and may be interesting for the forthcoming generations, an honor which he rightfully deserves.
Keywords: Spanish music, J. de Nebra, Spanish theatre, zarzuela, auto sacramental, organ.
