Lipov Translation of the article is devoted to the work of the American avant-garde composer of the early twentieth century. music philosopher, musicologist, poet, pioneer in the field of aleatorics, electronic music and non-standard use of musical instruments, John Milton Cage (1912–1992), one of the most famous representatives of avant-garde music of the XX century. The composer was a supporter of the connection in the artistic process of various types of art, considering art as a holistic phenomenon, in which some of its forms are inseparable from others. Cage was also the inventor of the "prepared piano" – a kind of piano, the sound of which is created using various objects placed on or between the strings, resulting in a piano sound combined with percussion, creating a certain timbre complex (assemblage) of drums, ringing, humming sounds of the main tone based on new principles of organization of musical composition. "Sonatas and Interludes" – a cycle of twenty pieces for "prepared piano", written by Cage in 1946–1948, represents, in comparison with his other works for "prepared piano", a musical phenomenon in which the composer raised the technique of rhythmic proportions to a new level of difficulty.
