Boris Asafiev in the mirror of an English reader: A few words about the monograph of Elina Viljanen |
M.V. Andreykina
The article is devoted to some aspects of understanding the large-scale study of contemporary Finnish musicologist Elina Viljanen “The Problem of the Modern and Tradition: The Early Soviet Musical Culture and the Musicological Theory of Boris Asafiev’s (1884–1949)”. The works of the largest Russian musicologist, composer, critic, teacher Boris Asafiev attracted the attention of many Soviet and Russian scientists of the twentieth century. Taking part in the Soviet project of modernization of Russian culture, Asafiev rethinks the Russian musical tradition from the perspective of European scientific theories. The book by Elina Villanen is a new unique view of the 21st century scholar on the greatest personality of the 20th century in the field of music and his work, as well as on the whole Soviet culture, which has become the guiding star for many talents of the past and present. A theoretical search by Asafiev for the foundations of a new cultural theory of music, which would meet the most urgent social challenges of society and time, was developed by Viljanen into a system saturated with logic and insight. This review article presents a concise look at the book (and at the same time at its hero), which supplemented the golden fund of musicology.
Keywords: Boris Asafiev, musical art, musical science, musicology, Russian culture, intonation theory, ideology.
