Shostakovich and Sviridov: Petersburg–Petrograd–Leningrad A small diptych |
A.I. Demchenko
The article consists of two sections. The first of them is «D.D. Shostakovich’s St. Petersburg symphonies». The life of this composer was closely connected with the city on the Neva. Of his fifteen symphonies, which form the basis of his artistic heritage, three are directly related to his hometown. The Seventh symphony was created at the beginning of the war (1941), was called «Leningrad» and became the first link of the dramatic epic associated with the events of the Great Patriotic war. In the second half of 1950-ies Shostakovich returned to the revolutionary past of Petersburg–Petrograd, which was in touch with the actual reality of the time of creation of these works: Symphony No. 11 «The year 1905» (1957) and Symphony No. 12 «The year 1917» (1961). The second section of the article is «G.V. Sviridov: Leningrad origins». In Leningrad took place the formation of talent and style of the composer, and mainly under the influence of D.D. Shostakovich. The main milestones of his work of this period: the vocal cycle «Six romances to the words of Alexander Pushkin», a number of instrumental works and the last vocal cycle written in Leningrad – «Songs to the words of Robert Burns.»
Keywords: Petersburg–Petrograd–Leningrad, Shostakovich’s symphonies № 7, 11, 12, Sviridov’s early work.
