Music and Time Annotation << Back On Two Types of Composition Techniques in Messiaen’s Late Works S.M. Kolbasova The article focuses on two types of composition techniques in Messiaen’s late works: canonic, the ranks (rows) and progressions. In his creative works Messiaen revives aesthetic und technical principles of medieval modal system in a new way. For example, а characteristic feature of Messiaen’s canons is their relation to the technique before Bach’s epoch that is expressed in the usage of such types of canons as inversion and proportional , similar to rondell. Messiaen also applies canons that combine peculiarities of different forms (№ 8 «The Eclairs of Otherworld», «Concert», 3rd part). He also applies arithmetic und geometrical progressions. Both types of techniques keep connection to the methods of previous periods and with its other kinds help to create Messiaen’s large «polystile» of his late works.
