Music and Time Annotation << Back The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts in Liturgical Tradition of The Holy Dormition Kiev-Caves Lavra N.S. Maryasina This article is devoted to the analysis of the liturgical singing tradition of The Liturgy of The Presanctified Gifts, a special rite of the Lent in an ancient Russian monastery – The Holy Dormition Kiev-Caves Lavra. Being the first Russian monastery, Kiev-Caves Lavra significantly influenced on the formation of Russian religious rite, especially on its singing component. The Kiev-Caves chant, being formed during almost thousand years, is the important and original phenomenon in Russian singing arts. Along with that, some of the most ancient liturgical singing traditions were still persisted in Kiev-Caves Lavra up to XX century, for example, certain features of the Studiysko-Aleksievskiy Charter (Typicon) which was actual in Russia up to XV century. Moreover, the rite of Lavra had followed more exactly to the ancient prescriptions regarding to the style of performance of the certain chants, in comparison with other monasteries and churches. Despite the Kiev-Caves Lavra was closed twice in XX century, the singing of Lavra was largely revived in our days, due to attention of its inhabitants to the ancient singing and traditions. In subject article some bright features of liturgical tradition of Kiev-Caves Lavra are described by the example of The Liturgy of The Presanctified Gifts.
