Music and Time Annotation << Back The Divine Service to the Tsar's Michael Feodorovich Romanov Saint Patron as a Monument of the Musical Culture of the XVII Century N.I. Evdokimova The theme of this study is the divine service to the reverend Mikhail Malein in Russian singing manuscripts of the 16th–17th centuries. Saint Mikhail Malein was one of the Byzantine saints of the 10th century, whose name became known in Russia, thanks to the tzar Mikhail Feodorovich who was founder of Romanov dynasty. The tsar Michael was born on the 12th of July in 1596, the memorial day of the saint. The choice of this topic was caused due to the interest to the musical part of the divine service on the tsar birthday. In manuscripts the name of St. Michael Malein is fixed from the 1st quarter of the 15th century. The first hymns to saint appeared in the beginning of the 16th century. The number of hymns to saint started to increase only in the first half of the 17th century. From our view point, it is due to the need to create a complete divine servis in honor of the saint. In the manuscripts of the Michail Feodorovich’s period we found three variants of the ministration to Saint Mikhail Malein, each of one gravitates toward the composition of the vigil service.
