Music and Time Annotation << Back Music Culture in 18th–19th Century Konigsberg Krzysztof Szatrawski (Poland), Russian text: E.R. Prishchep The article presents an overview of the development of the musical culture of the city of Königsberg (since 1946 – Kaliningrad) from the XVII to the XX century. A detailed description covers historical events that affected the development of music in this city. The general tendencies in the development of the music of all German principalities can be traced in Königsberg, although there are some features characteristic only for this locality. The article mentions all the most important composers working in Koenigsberg. In the XVII century it was Heinrich Albert, Johann Valentin Meder. In the 18th century, Konigsberg became a province of Prussia, after the transfer of the capital to Berlin. The musical environment of the city forms the works of Georg Raddäus and Georg Riedel, although most of their works were lost. Königsberg is the birthplace of the famous composer, artist and writer E. T. A. Hoffmann, who influenced the development of European romanticism. In the first half of the 19th century Otto Nicolai and Louis Ehlert worked here, in the second half of the 19th century – Hermann Goetz and Constanz Berneker. The musical environment of the city was created not only by professional musicians, but also by amateur musicians, as well as entrepreneurs and patrons of art: Carl Julius Gebauhr, the founder of the piano factory and the Konigsberg Conservatory. In the middle of the 20th century, the development of the musical culture of Konigsberg ends and a new stage of the cultural life of this city begins, under the name Kaliningrad, as part of the Russian Federation.
