Music at the Descalzas Reales Convent in Tomàs Luis de Victoria’s Time: 1559–1611 |
M.V. Riznychenko
The aim of this research is to explore the musical life of the Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales into the period (second half sixteenth to early seventeenth century) in which the convent had been functioned like the religious institution and the residence of feminine members of the House of Habsburg simultaneously. Particular attention has given to such the issue as performing practice of polyphonic and instrumental music in Spanish convents of this epoch. Exploration of the convent’s first statute by Princess Juana the Austrian and its later versions made by Philip II and Philip III represents the process of formation the professional chapel in a Spanish monastery. The convents musical library and repertoire analysis demonstrates that some important changes in tastes had been occured: after 1580 the works of Spanish composers such as brothers Guerrero, J. Navarro, M. Robledo, H. de Issasi, A. Lobo has become more and more popular rather than Franco-Flamish music which has been commonly dominated before. The special attention is given to T. L. de Victoria’s participation in the musical life of the convent.
