Juegos de escarnio or Christmas Jokes in the Medieval Spanish Church |
K.A. Starkova
The article is devoted to different species of the comic culture of the Middle ages, which foreign and national investigators have been writing about. The most part of the comic actions belong to winter-spring time before and after Christmas or ahead of Easter and afterwards – this is the Feast of Fools, the Boy-Bishop, the Carnival and other, what were related with discounting religious lifestyle and ridiculing «serious» liturgical elements and church rite at all. In the article this traditions will be considered through cultural life of medieval Spain. The most interesting for us is phenomenon of «epistle-farce» or buffoon reading wich were performed on the feast of St. Stephen in the Christmas period. They are interesting in that in addition to including humorous phrases to usual liturgical text takes place paraphrasing of the latin hymn what was very common in the Middle ages culture but, on the other hand, not so widespread in that case. Also, there are medieval manuscripts conserved untill our days that include text and musical part of that Christmas performances.
