Perfect Lexicographer: Some Facts of Life and Works of Johann Gottfried Walther |
I.P. Romanov
This article is devoted to the problem of life and creative heritage of Johann Gottfried Walther (1684–1748). This extraordinary man – a German organist, composer and music scientist – went down in history primarily as the author of the first musical encyclopedia in the world – «Musicalisches Lexicon» (1732). However, other aspects of his creativity, in addition to lexicography, as well as the circumstances of himself J. G. Walther’s life, mostly are not well known to the «wide public». Meanwhile, the biography and works of Walther contain a lot of interesting and, at times, instructive facts. The article examines some of the facts of his life, known to the Western authors of studies, but «remaining in the shade» for our country’s readers. In particular, it is talking about the biographical facts that accompanied the emergence, or have caused the creation of musical and music-theoretical works of Walther – organ chorales, «Praecepta der musicalischen Composition» and «Musicalisches Lexicon».
Keywords: Johann Gottfried Walther, biography, creative heritage, composer works, «Praecepta der musicalischen Composition» and «Musicalisches Lexicon».
