Timbral Quality of Sound and Tuvan Music |
V.Y. Suzukei
Timbre is a characteristic of musical sound that is very difficult to define in theoretical musical knowledge. And, even though an understanding of overtones constantly comes to the fore in connection with defining timbre, until this day no one has paid attention to the fact that melody in Tuvan instrumental music and xöömei melody is constructed exclusively from overtones. This characteristic of sound in the instrumental music of Tuva allows for significant enrichment of scientific knowledge in the area of timbral characteristics of musical sound.
Keywords: timbre, overtones, tuvan overtone instrumental music and tuvan khoomei (throat singing).
