Music and Time Annotation << Back Legacy of V. Ewald (1860–1935) in the Context of Russian Ensemble Music of the Late XIX – Early XX Centuries P.A. Vasnin The article is devoted to the performing art and creative works of Victor Vladimirovich Ewald. By studying the biography of the composer, analyzing the information about his outstanding teachers and mentors, researching into his creative interests, we can recreate a picture of musical culture of the late XIX – the early XX centuries in the context of chamber and instrument performance. The patterns of family way and the professional activity of V.F. Ewald, the composer’s father, demonstrate the creative atmosphere and love to art in the family where the composer was brought up. The special attention is paid to K.Yu. Davydov, V.V. Vurm, M.P. Belyaev, N.I. Zaremby, M.R. Shchiglev and N.A. Sokolov, who played an important role in the development of V. Ewald’s style as a musician and a composer. Musical life of St. Petersburg of the late XIX – the early XX centuries is studied as well. The activity of Belyaev’s musical circle is described, in particular, a string quartet of the society, where V. Ewald approved himself as a performing cellist for the first time. In the article the influence of V. Ewald’s legacy on the development of a genre of chamber music for brass ensembles is considered. Keywords: V.V.
