Melos of the Greek Orthodox Church
Chants in the Post-Reform Period
(from 1881 to the Present Day) |
L.S. Shpakovskaya
The article is devoted to melodic chants of the Greek Orthodox Church, recorded by analytical notation developed in the late
nineteenth century, and performed now in Greek churches. The purpose of the research is cultivation of the theoretical foundations
of Greek melodic chants, which is carried out based on the Greek and Slavic musical-theoretical sources, as well as the authors
own hearing and performing experiences. The recordings of the Greek chants became the material for this article – transcribed
by the author with the help of the five-line musical notation in line with modern ethnomusicology. This article discusses the main
characteristics of Greek melodies such as system, scales, rhythm, harmony, etc. In the outcome of the study, author concludes that
the post-reform Greek melodic chants represent certain ideas of the ancient (the theory of three kinds of music, the quantitative
rhythm) and Byzantine Musicology (Octoechos system as a forming factor of the mode). According to the author, mastering musical
theoretical foundations of Greek chants opens ways to adapt them to the liturgical practice of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Keywords: сhurch singing, Greek chants, Byzantine chants, liturgical chants, liturgical monody, melodic, Octoechos, echos, chronos protos,
antique musical scales.
