Antique-Medieval Latin Grammars and Johannes de Garlandia’s Doctrine of the Rhythmic Modes |
M. Girfanova
Johannes de Garlandia’s treatise «De musica mensurabili» (dated approximately 1240) is the earliest work, which outlines the theory of modal rhythm – the first system of musical rhythm in the history of Western polyphonic music. The current studies point to the origin of modal rhythm theory of classical metrics, but the connection of Garlandia’s doctrine with Latin grammars, that were circulating at the time and which set out the antique metrical theory, remains poorly understood. Comparative analysis of the theoretical description of antique feet – prototypes of rhythmic modes in medieval grammar writings and rhythmic modes – the metric units of modal rhythm in Garlandia’s treatise reveals coincidence in the terminology, definitions, principles of systematization. However, Garlandia revised the ancient theory due to the nature of musical object, that his theory described. The Garlandia’s doctrine summarized rhythmic practice of school Notre Dame of Perotin’s period (end of XII – early XIII century). The article shows (on the example of organum – central polyphonic genre of the time), how the original “grammar” model was modified due to the new genre and stylistic terms.
