Music and Time Annotation << Back Rachmaninoff in St. Petersburg L. Kovaleva-Ogorodnova The paper deals with musical activities of Sergei V. Rachmaninoff’s paternal ancestors (the Rachmaninoffs) as well as of his maternal (the Butakovs, the Me(n)zencampfs, the Strelnikovs). The article describes Saint-Petersburg periods in the lives of the members of the mentioned families , their artistic contacts and relations with outstanding representatives of the 18th–20th centuries Russian culture. The paper also contains the concise description of their activities and participation in Russian capital’s musical life. The paper covers different periods of Rachmaninoff’s residence in Saint Petersburg, such as years of studies in Petersburg Conservatory, his later appearance in the capital as a young composer, the rise of popularity, stage triumphs and first performances of his compositions in St. Petersburg. The paper contains comments on some documents connected with St. Petersburg part of Rachmaninoff’s biography. Previously unknown or forgotten places of residence in St. Petersburg are revealed. Some references to the representatives of musical society of the Russian capital who influenced upon Rachmaninoff’s life are also given in the paper.
